First Time to Cook My Own Rice

When I was 13 years old. It was my opah who taught me, not my mum because she is a career woman, superbly busy with her work and need to rush to house, preparing lunch for us during her lunch break. Since my mom is not that patience in teaching her brat daughter, luckily opah came to my house one day, and taught me how to cook rice. Since then, the rice that I cook tastes better than my mom’s. Now, I said this based on people’s testimonial and how laku my nasi compared to my mom’s. Seriously.

Halloween costumes

Nuffnang Nokia Silent Halloween is coming up, so I’m writing what to wear for the Halloween party.

Sarah Palin has created a fashion craze in the US. Everyone wants to have her spectacles and wigs. But to have her costume this Halloween, Abraham Issa (the owner of Buffalo Breath Costumes) commented “Everyone is asking for her, but she came into the picture too late, so no one had time to make the mask,” Issa said. “You have to do glasses and a wig.”

How to work pink shades

As mentioned in previous entry, pink is the new black. But how can we work out the shade, without looking awkward and Barbie-ish? Here are some tips that I dug out from Harper’s Bazaar and some are my own personal opinion.

  1. Most pink eye shadows can make the eyes look tired, so go for a soft pink with a golden undertone. I have used it on my friend and it does bring people to look at her windows of soul.
  2. Sugary-sweet pink does not suit everyone. Try to make a statement with hot fuchsia lips instead. Remember Sophie Ellis Bextor? She rocks the colour. Urm, just try it at your own risk.
  3. A cool-toned pink lipsticks works wonders to whiten teeth. Look for ones with hints of blue. For lip gloss, I would suggest T.LeClerc Lip Gloss in Violet Givrée (RM75).
  4. For perfect rosy cheek, put your biggest smile and brush from the centre of the cheeks, making gradually larger circle that swirls outwards–so that the blush application fade out nicely and makes you look natural. The secret is the brush stroke.
I just found great product that would saves your time doing this is Benefit’s Posie Tint (RM 139)–you just dab it onto your skin and blend it nicely. Seriously, it will make people say “Hey, you’re blushing!” instead of “Urm, are you wearing blusher?”. Unless you put on a lot of it. Uh oh, it can also be applied on your lips.

Pink October

This month is about pink ribbon, pink blusher, pink external hard drive and more pink stuffs. Nah. It is about Breast Cancer Awareness month. October is the month where massive global campaign about breast cancer is being done in the whole wide world. The message is one: early detection saves lives.

Estee Lauder is the biggest campaigner and there are some major cosmetic brand follow Estee Lauder’s act like Bobbi Brown, Aramis, Clinique, Donna Karan Cosmetics, La Mer, Origins, Sean John Fragrances and Tommy Hilfiger Toileteries. (More on elcompanies.com)

In Malaysia, this noble act is supported by Breast Cancer Welfare Association (BCWA), Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation (CARIF), The National Cancer Society of Malaysia (MAKNA–who provides free and subsidised mammogram screenings) and College of Radiology Malaysia.

The make-up is brought to you by Estee Lauder.

Here’s what we can do to lead a healthy lifestyle and delay the cancer:

  1. Get screened–and consult your doctor how frequent you should have it done.
  2. Check yourself regularly (breast self-exam) and report any changes to your doctor.
  3. Eat more vegetables and and fruits. Their fiber, antioxidants and other nutrients can help.
  4. Work out. Yoga. Go to gym. Involve in sports. Do whatever you love (in my case, I love the muscle-churning Pilates).
  5. Watch the scale. Extra weight=extra risk.
  6. Do not ever think of smoking. Do quit.
  7. Drink less and live more.

Similar information can be retrieved from Estee Lauder and participating brands counters. They also provide pink ribbons, for free! Remember, live healthily and wear pink ribbon!

Facebook faces

I found a good article that describes people’s psychology needs according to their Facebook profile pictures. People post pictures because they want to tell others, who they are, or what they want, or what they need. So, which one is your description?

What does your Facebook profile say about you?

By Hannah Wood, Mirror.co.uk 6/10/2008

How often do you change your Facebook profile picture? And just how much do you agonise over it?

Have you ever used a holiday bikini shot or a cheek-to-cheek one with your new squeeze (just to let the exes know how happy you are)?

Do your friends shout out: ‘That’s your new profile picture!’ When they catch you at your glamorous best on a night out? And do you actually look anything like that well-edited shot posted up on your Facebook page?

According to a survey done by cosmopolitan.co.uk we care more about our appearance on social networks than in real life.

Cosmo put a sample of profile pics to social psychologist Dr Asi Sharabi and asked him to interpret what they tell you about the person behind it.

Match yourself against his verdicts:

POUTING: Presenting such a provocative, sensual symbol indicates someone who wishes to be acknowledged in a sexual way – seeking intimacy or a partner. It could also indicate being a very tactile person

Photobucket
WITH AN ANIMAL: A person who displays themselves as capable of caring and nurturing, indicating need of an outlet for these tendencies and a broody nature.

Photobucket

DANCING: To display yourself on display, so to speak, is the ultimate invitation to be watched. Those who show themselves dancing are likely to be strongly extrovert. Additionally, in Western Culture, dancing has strong connotations toward leisure and freedom, denoting a hedonistic, pleasure-seeking streak.

Photobucket
WITH A BOYFRIEND: A popular picture type with serial monogamists, and signifies searching for a deeper or more committed relationship.

Photobucket
WITH A GUY (NOT BOYFRIEND): As well as a simple flirtatious contact, a picture with a potentially ambiguous meaning shows a love of creating stories, and playing games with the social fabric. In short, one who thrives on gossip.

Photobucket
DOING AN ACTIVITY: This is someone who identifies with their abilities and experiences rather than emotions or relationships. It may also indicate an unwillingness to commit or settle down.

Photobucket

ON HOLIDAY: Those who identify themselves with a carefree holiday may have a tendency to over-stress in their everyday lives. This could also indicate escapist fantasies or a dreamer disposition.

Photobucket
LOOKING AWAY FROM CAMERA: An unwillingness to be caught and posed in the conventional way is indicative of someone headstrong and confident in their approach to life.

Photobucket
NIGHT OUT/FANCY (RAYA) DRESS: This image represents the social, extroverted aspects of a personality; denoting that they value confidence and attention highly.

Dr Sharabi said: “Our social network profiles have become so ubiquitous with our lives that our online and offline appearances are now fully intertwined. On social networks, just like in the physical world, we are constantly working on our self-image, putting forward facets of ourselves that we want seen, and, as in life, we unwittingly uncover aspects of ourselves that we might have preferred to have kept hidden.

Yang takde gamba: Takde kamera, pemalu, stalker (ex girlfriend) atau tak yakin diri.

Must-read books

These books were among of 75 book listed by Esquire ‘must read in your lifetime’.

I think I should grab this book. A good man is hard to find by Flannery O’Connor.

Photobucket

And this is another must-read-book. A man changed after he read a book (I think the reviewer refers to The Holy Quran). The book is entitled “The autobiography of Malcolm X” (or aka Malek El Shabbaz). The only auto biography in the list. Usually an autobiography is about amazing people who had done tremendous deeds. I bet this book is inspiring.

Photobucket

And I just don’t get it why good people who fight for people’s right like Malcolm X, and Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated. Why do assassins kill these kind of people? Don’t we want peace and the good in this world?

Telekung fashion

Ramadhan has come back. Ahlan wa sahlan (welcome). So does telekung. One can see women wearing it usually after dawn. They will wear it to go to mosque for isya’ and tarawih prayer.  I used to have cotton telekung but nowadays, textile technology has produced sunwashed fabric, which is much lighter, easy to clean and pretty opaque (when I used cotton telekung, I have to wear something inside or the telekung must be layered).

During the pilgrimage (hajj) season hajj pilgrimage , telekung is the garment that sets Asia Pacific women apart from the other women. It’s almost similar to Afghan’s burqa, but different in terms of its cut and design. Telekung comes in white, carries the angelic, purity and obedience image.

It can also be a gift from the groom to the bride (hantaran) which symbolically send the message, “be a good servant of Allah and a faithful wife”. It is usually chosen as a gift because it is easily decorated and at times, it can be creatively made into the shape of a flower, or a hand-held fan.
