Recently, there are a lot of serious crime cases in Malaysia. Murder, child raping, bribery, robbery, fraud and so forth. The news headlines are full with stories of crime. Looks like Malaysia have no good news but crime. Is Malaysia breeding rapist, rogues and bandits? I am not going to analyse the crimes here, but I am here to list the related news headlines:

  1. Murder of Mongolian model, Altantuya Sharibuu.
  2. Nurin’s murder.
  3. Murder of two men in palm estates.
  4. A group peddling drug.
  5. Five men in court for abducting, molesting 19-year-old girl.
  6. 7yrs jail, 10 strokes of rotan for drug possession.
  7. IGP: We are closer in on the killer.

Scary huh? I am scared to go back as well. My country is not safe anymore. Does anyone care?? We are getting worse ladies and gentlemen…

Emo: language and literature

Assalamualaikum. Peace to be upon you. Currently I am doing dissertation on nursery rhymes and this entry will explain why on earth I take this matter seriously. Being in Malaysia, you cannot resist the heatwave of the media. I watch kids’ show on TV9 (tagline: dekat di hati), on one fateful day. The famous shows that I watched: Dora the Explorer and Blue’s clues. However, in Malaysian, they were dubbed to Malay language. I am a person who is concern about language and kids’ language development. Also, my beloved mother tongue, Bahasa Melayu Malaysia (different from bahasa Melayu Indonesia). Right, you can consider this as an open letter to TV9 as well. No problem at all. Oh, call me monyet or pondan whatsoever. My job here is to give a lesson.

I am not sure on what purpose they dubbed the shows. I do support the ideas of ‘mother tongue as the foundation of education’ and ‘cintailah bahasa kita’. It’s not that I go against the idea of dubbing it to Bahasa Melayu Malaysia. Imagine if you heard this:

Dora: Mari kita tolong Pigmy Marmoset mengutip sap pokok!

I was quite blur when they mention “sap pokok”. I thought hard. I thought it was Malay word but it was not. From Cambridge Dictionary, the definition for sape is: the liquid that carries food to all parts of a plant. Simply in Malay language, “sap pokok” is “getah pokok”.The translation given by TV9 actually makes young viewers more confuse actually. Even as an adult I was very confuse really. Plus, quite a weird thing when they didn’t change some spanish words.

Nevermind. It’s not much an issue. Just a word anyway. Then I watched Blue’s clues. Steve was hunting treasure using Blue’s clues. Nice at first. Then Blue gave Steve a picture.

Steve: Tengok ini kawan-kawan. Gambar Little Miss Muffet. Apa kita nak buat dengan Little Miss Muffet?

LMM: Tolong saya selesaikan teka-teki ini. Little Miss Muffet, duduk atas bukit, makan dadihnya. Kemudian datang…

(Picture of 3 animals, obviously I can’t remember the other 2 as I love the spider :P)

Again, my brain was puzzled. It doesn’t rhyme at all. Are they trying to tell young Malaysians to translate English traditional nursery rhymes as well? I’m so sorry. This is not right. We should learn it as it is. According to its context. Please do not translate a nursery rhymes for Malaysian children’s sake!

Then Steve found another clue.

Steve: Tengok ni. Ini Jack. Masih ingat Jack? Mari kita tolong Jack.

(Jack was wearing his pyjamas and hat)

Me: Who’s jack? Is there any character in Blue’s clues named Jack?

Steve: Adik-adik tahu apa yang Jack perlu lakukan?

(There was a picture of 3 objects)

Then I remembered. It’s the character in Mother Goose nursery rhymes!

Jack be nimble, Jack be quick, Jack jump over the candle stick.

Oh, my, god. I couldn’t imagine how Malaysian children perceive it. The reason we learn nursery rhymes, without alteration is because of history, culture and language pattern. Those who are not exposed to nursery rhymes during childhood basically have weak foundation in reading. OK! no time for explanation for this time being. Will just post my dissertation copy once I’m finish with it.

Anyhow, I am looking for a way to complaint to TV9. Anyone has any contact? Do leave it in my comment box. Bahasa jiwa bangsa.

Merdeka ya?

Merdeka konsert

Merdeka ‘negaraku’

Merdeka berciuman

Merdeka jerit sahutan

Merdeka berpeleseran

Merdeka memperaga pakaian clan

Merdeka dengan bakaran bunga api

Merdekanya berpacaran hingga waktu subuh

Merdeka sungguh bila koleksi sampah sarap dikutip DBKL

Merdeka benar negaraku sehingga aku sendiri rasa buntu.

Takziah

Salam. Peace. Shalom. Recently Malaysia was shaken by the most tragic accident. 20 people died and 8 wounded. No wonder they barely survive. The bus looks like this when they get it out.

bus

My goodness. Super Express bus is so super ah? Got 19 tickets for traffic misconduct some more. For full news you can browse Utusan, or just keep yourself up to date with TV3 news. Takziah, belasungkawa, condolences for the victims’ family. May Allah bless you all.

Review on TV3’s cerekarama: Mencari syurga

Pergh. We are more British than the British. OK enough of that let us read the synopsis and I insert here and there some review or commentary.

Kenapa menulis blog?

Bismillah.

Hahah.

Rakan saya: A***, kau follow rancangan dot dot dot tak?”

Saya: Er, tak. It’s not my cup of tea anymore…(followed by dead silence)

Saya tidak bermaksud menujukan komik ini khusus kepada mana-mana individu. Mahu menjadikan ruang kecil blog ini seperti ruang vlog Brother Ali dari UmmahFilms, dengan tujuan yang sama, “Reminding you just in case you forgot”.

Ya Allah, please grant our dua. Amin.

Everyone is talking about Lina Joy

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim. In the name of Allah, the most gracious, the most merciful. Of course I would like to say something on Lina Joy’s case. She wants to be an apostasy, using Quran. This verse particularly.

In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
[2:256]
Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error: whoever rejects evil and believes in God hath grasped the most trustworthy hand- hold, that never breaks. And God heareth and knoweth all things.

* v.256 : Compulsion is incompatible with religion; because 1) religion depends upon faith and will, and these would be meaningless if induced by force; 2) Truth and Error have been so clearly shown up by the mercy of God that there should be no doubt in the minds of any persons of goodwill as to the fundamentals of faith; 3) God’s protection is continuous and His Plan is always to lead us from the depths of darkness into the clearest light.
* Hand-hold: something which the hands can grasp for safety in a moment of danger. It may be a loop or a handle, or anchor. If it is without flaw, so that there is no danger of breaking, our safety is absolutely assured so long as we hold fast to it. Our safety then depends on our own will and faith; God’s help and protection will always be unfailing if we hold firmly to God and trust in Him.

(Translation and interpretation by Abdullah Yusuf Ali)

Weird huh? She claimed that she is not a believer of Islam, but she still want to use Quran, the holy book for Muslim. I wonder whether she really read the quran, cover to cover? Has she come across verse 208? has she studied Quran really well, until she mesmerized by it’s beauty and truth. Does she know that all the pre-nuptial agreement that is popularized by Hollywood stars nowadays, actually already stated in the Quran, dated 1400 years ago. Does she know that? Why on earth she bring such disgrace. I don’t care about the constitution, but she’s trying to use Quran, and she misinterpret it. What a shame! Can someone tell her about this please. Oh, Lina, if by any chance you come across this tiny blog, I hope you already know what you are doing. I don’t want you to lost in your own ignorance. If you really want to use the Quran, use it fully. Not taking bits and pieces, without having a full understanding of it. Wonder why you are doing all this mess, because in the UK, many women revert to Islam because Islam the complete and perfect. Wonder why you did that Lina? You are stepping backward, not forward.

I can see many muslims in the East, but not Islam. I can see Islam in the West, but not many Muslims.

Read: Jeff Ooi’s compilation of other people’s rambling on this issue.

Ya Alah, protect me from anger and apostasy.

From surah Ali Imran: [8] “Our Lord!” (they say), “let not our hearts deviate now after Thou hast guided us, but grant us mercy from Thine own Presence; for Thou art the Grantor of bounties without measure.

[9] “Our Lord! Thou art He that will gather mankind together against a Day about which there is no doubt; for Allah never fails in His promise.”

Ameen.

Parliamentary: UK versus Malaysia

Comparison of politics in United Kingdom and Malaysia:

Warning: You might find it’s distressing if you turn up the volume.

This is how Malaysian MPs’ works its parliament session.

This is how UK’s MP speaks, and this is how MPs’ in UK talks in the parliament.

Is there anyone shouting to express their disagreement? If yes, how they do it?

PS: Don’t forget to consider the content they are debating about.
PPS: I am sure you can do better choice next time.
